What the letter is for
A letter of invitation supports a visitor visa application by explaining who is inviting the applicant, why they are coming and what arrangements have been made. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada does not require the letter to be notarized, but many applicants choose to have it notarized or commissioned because it demonstrates that the host signed it in front of an authorized person.
What a useful letter covers
The host’s full name, status in Canada and contact details; the visitor’s full name, date of birth and relationship to the host; the purpose of the visit and the dates; where the visitor will stay; and who is covering the costs. Missing details are the most common weakness in an invitation letter.
An honest limit
An invitation letter does not guarantee a visa. The decision belongs to IRCC, which weighs the whole application. Anyone who promises you an outcome because of a notarized letter is misleading you.

Does a letter of invitation have to be notarized?
IRCC does not require notarization. Many hosts still have the letter notarized or commissioned because it shows the letter was signed in front of an authorized person and confirms the signer’s identity. We can do this while you wait.
Will a notarized invitation letter get the visa approved?
No. The decision is made by IRCC based on the entire application. A properly prepared and notarized letter is supporting evidence — it is not a guarantee, and nobody can honestly promise you an approval.

Do I need an appointment?

What should I bring?
A valid government-issued photo ID (Passport or Driver’s License) and your documents, unsigned — the notary must witness your signature. If you need certified copies, bring the original documents. Free printing and copying is available.
